David Fong is a composer, mixing engineer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Austin, Texas. Known for his adaptability, David tailors his work to the unique needs of every project, while maintaining a signature style defined by intricate meter and an emotive, evocative quality. From scoring films to performing on stage, his versatility and artistic vision leave a lasting impression on every collaboration.
Growing up in San Antonio, TX, David discovered his passion for music and began mastering the piano, oboe, and saxophone. Early in his career, his solo piano compositions earned recognition at Yamaha’s Junior Original Concert Series, laying the foundation for his journey as a composer and performer. David has performed in and written for an eclectic range of ensembles throughout his musical career, including rock bands, marching bands, choirs, and orchestras. He further refined his talents at the University of Texas at Austin, earning degrees in biomedical engineering and music composition.
David’s exploration of film scoring showcases his range and adaptability across various creative projects. His debut feature film score for Phillip Dutton: Leap of Faith premiered at the Boston Film Festival and won Best Cinematography. He has also contributed to the score for the upcoming short film Crystal Beach, TX, premiering at the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) in March 2025. Currently, David is scoring The Newspaperman, a feature documentary chronicling the rise and fall of the Philadelphia Inquirer during Gene Roberts’ tenure.
Beyond the screen, David has been a core member of the Austin-based band Valice since 2018, bringing his talents as a multi-instrumentalist to their dynamic sound. Recognized as an official SXSW 2025 artist, Valice has received praise from Afterglow ATX’s Klaus Reissenweber, who remarked, “I wonder when — not if — this group will rise to become one of Austin’s greats.”
David’s creative reach extends to the stage, where he co-created and composed Mothership! The Musical, a satirical space melodrama commenting on sustainability, addiction, and societal anxieties about the future. The project received the Rainwater Innovation Grant in 2020, with its first act premiering as a socially distanced workshop in 2021.
David works at the Butler School of Music’s Recording Services department, contributing his expertise to the production of live musical programs throughout the year. With a growing repertoire spanning film, live performance, and innovative stage productions, David Fong continues to make his mark in the Austin music industry.
